***  As of 12:01 a.m. EDT June 12, 2022, the CDC order requiring all persons aged two and above to show a negative COVID-19 test result or documentation of recovery from COVID-19 before boarding a flight to the United States, is rescinded.  Starting at 12:01 a.m. EDT on June 12, 2022, the CDC will no longer order air passengers to show a negative COVID-19 test result, or show documentation of recovery from COVID-19, prior to boarding a flight to the United States.

Of note, CDC’s Order requiring proof of vaccination for non-U.S. citizen nonimmigrants to travel to the United States is still in effect.  For more information see  Requirement for Proof of COVID-19 Vaccination for Air Passengers.
Country-Specific Information.
 The Tanzania Ministry of Health released “Travel Advisory #10” on March 16, 2022, with updated entry and exit requirements for travelers to mainland Tanzania.  The Zanzibar Ministry of Health released “Travel Advisory #10” on March 25, 2022, with updated entry and exit requirements for travelers to Zanzibar.  There is more information on the requirements for each area below in the “Entry and Exit Requirements” section.  “Travel Advisory #10” for mainland Tanzania can be found here:   https://www.moh.go.tz/en/brochures.  “Travel

 Community transmission of COVID-19 continues across Tanzania.
 The Department of State’s current travel advisory level for Tanzania is Level 2 – Exercise Increased Caution. The  U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also provides specific recommendations regarding international travel.
 The Tanzanian government started reporting limited aggregated weekly numbers to the World Health Organization on COVID-19 in September 2021. The government is promoting mitigation measures such as handwashing, masks, and social distancing but public compliance remains low.
 Despite the opening up of sectors of business and society throughout Tanzania, the risk of contracting COVID-19 through community transmission remains. The Embassy has recommended that U.S. government personnel and their families exercise continued caution in day-to-day activities (e.g., limiting the entry of individuals into your home) and take steps to limit potential exposure while outside the home (e.g.,  wearing a face mask,  washing your hands frequently,  observing social distancing, and avoiding crowds).

  •  Healthcare facilities in Tanzania can become quickly overwhelmed in a healthcare crisis. Limited hospital capacity throughout Tanzania could result in life-threatening delays for emergency medical care.
  • COVID-19 Testing Are either PCR or antigen tests available for U.S. citizens in Tanzania? Yes If so, are test results reliably available within one calendar day? Yes. While PCR test results can take more than one day, rapid antigen tests are available for departing travelers on a walk-in basis at international airports, including Terminal 3 of the Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro International Airport, and Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in Zanzibar.  Travelers planning to use an airport rapid test should arrive multiple hours early and contact the airport for additional information.  Airports might require travelers to test within six hours of their scheduled departure.  The cost for a rapid test is $10 in mainland Tanzania and $25 in Zanzibar. Travelers taking an airport rapid test from the mainland should register through  https://afyamsafiri.moh.go.tz   and list both their origin and destination as Tanzania in the system.  Please note, that the afyamsafiri system has been offline due to maintenance since May 1, 2022.  Until the maintenance is complete, travelers from the mainland do not need to register in that system for a rapid test at the airport.

  • U.S. citizens can book a COVID-19 PCR test through the Tanzanian Ministry of Health (MoH) website:  https://pimacovid.moh.go.tz/#/booking  . Travelers in
    Zanzibar can book through the Zanzibar MoH website:   https://mohz.go.tz/eng/  .  COVID-19 test costs vary but are generally between $50 and $200.
  • The MoH states that you will receive a text message with a link to your COVID-19 certificate when your results are ready.

  • Humanitarian exemptions to this order will be granted on an extremely limited basis and will only be considered when the country of departure lacks adequate COVID-19 testing capacity. To submit information in support of an exemption, email  drsacs@state.gov .
  • The CDC provides additional guidance for international travel during COVID-19.
    COVID-19 Vaccine Information:
  • Has the government of Tanzania approved a COVID-19 vaccine for use? Yes, Are vaccines available in Tanzania for U.S. citizens to receive? Yes. Tanzanian citizens and non-citizen residents age 18 and over are eligible for vaccination.
  • Visit the  FDA’s website   to learn more about FDA-approved vaccines in the United States.
  • The United States Government does not plan to provide COVID-19 vaccinations to private U.S. citizens overseas. Please follow host country developments and guidelines for COVID-19 vaccination.
    Entry and Exit Requirements
  • Are U.S. citizens permitted to enter? Yes
    Travelers are required to complete an online Health Surveillance Form (at  https://afyamsafiri.moh.go.tz/   for Tanzania mainland and at  https://healthtravelznz.mohz.go.tz   for Zanzibar) within 24 hours prior to arrival. Travelers will then receive a Unique Health Code (UHC), which they will present to health officials upon arrival.  Please note that the Health Surveillance Form system for mainland Tanzania has been undergoing maintenance since May
    1, 2022.  Travelers to mainland Tanzania are not being asked for a Health Surveillance Form during this maintenance.
  • Is a negative COVID-19 test (PCR and/or serology) required for entry? Yes, Fully vaccinated travelers are exempt from testing requirements.  Travelers will be required to present a valid vaccination certificate with a QR code for verification upon arrival.  Travelers without a QR code on their vaccination certificate should
    contact their healthcare provider or find more information from CDC on accessing a QR code here:   https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/covid- 19/reporting/vams/recipient-certificate.html.  Travelers may also be able to generate a QR code through services such as Global
    Haven:   https://globalhaven.org/  .
  • Travelers who are unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated are required to present a negative COVID-19 test certificate with QR code upon arrival. The test must be a Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) test or Nucleic Acid Amplification
    Test (NAAT) collected at a nationally accredited/approved laboratory, with the sample collected within 72 hours of departure to Tanzania.
    o Travelers in transit by air transport are exempt from both vaccination and COVID- 19 test requirements unless required by their airline or their final destination countries.
    o Children aged five years or younger are exempt from COVID-19 test requirements.

  • Are health screening procedures in place at airports and other ports of entry? Yes o All travelers entering Tanzania will be subject to enhanced screening for COVID- 19.
  • Travelers to Tanzania who are not fully vaccinated and are arriving from countries with variants of concern or with high numbers of COVID-19 cases or who have traveled through those countries in the last 14 days are required to take a rapid test at their own expense at the point of entry. The list of countries for which a
    rapid test is required can be found at  https://www.moh.go.tz   or at the point of  entry. Fully vaccinated travelers to are exempt from the COVID-19 rapid test requirements.
  • The COVID-19 rapid test cost for travelers arriving in the Tanzania mainland by air or marine vessel is $10 or TZS 23,000. The COVID-19 rapid test cost for travelers arriving in Zanzibar is $25 or TZS 58,000.
  • Children aged five years or younger are also exempt from the COVID-19 rapid test requirements.
  •  Travelers who test positive on their rapid test will be required to quarantine at their own expense. Please see “Quarantine Information” below for details.
  • Airlines collect passenger attestations from passengers departing Tanzania to the United States regarding COVID-19 vaccination status and testing.
  • Passengers must present the attestation in hard copy to the airlines before checkin. Airlines may or may not have forms available at their counters.
  • Internet and printing services are available at the airport for a fee, but travelers may find it easier to fill and print the form before starting their travel.

    Movement Restrictions
  • Is a curfew in place? No Are there restrictions on intercity or interstate travel? No
    Quarantine Information
  • Are U.S. citizens required to quarantine? No, except for certain circumstances, including travelers who test positive upon arrival.
    o Asymptomatic travelers who test positive upon arrival shall be subjected to mandatory quarantine at their own cost at designated places under strict surveillance procedures until they test negative using an RT-PCR test or are evaluated by public health experts as non-infectious.
  • Symptomatic travelers who test positive upon arrival will be isolated for treatment at designated health facilities until they become asymptomatic.  They will then be transferred to designated places for quarantine until they test negative using a RT-PCR test.

  • Travelers subject to mandatory quarantine are responsible for all costs associated
  • with the quarantine, including hotel and treatment fees.
